Go ahead, keep your secrets

"Teach me about myself," I say.
So, you take me to the edge
and point my eye at nothing.
"My life is a void?" I ask.
"Ah," you say, "watch closely."
So, I watch as you expose
the brink of the universe,
where the twirling of the planets
and the twinkling of the stars
have nothing left to hide;
where empty space laughs
and unleashes billions of lights
that become as easy to grasp as
the kindergarten sum of one plus one.

"I can know all this?" I gasp.
"Oh yes," you say. "It's all quite plain."
Then you lean down low.
"I have counted all your days," you say with usual sweetness.
"Tell me about them," I plead.
I look to see your answer but
you have slipped into your silence--
the kind that demands nothing but smiling
and nothing but breathing.
"Go ahead," I say as I lean closer to you,
"keep your secrets."
"I will tell you this," you say,
"you and I can know all things,
but you and I will always remain a mystery."
