Trinity

Ten points if you can track down the quote about friendship from either Lewis or Tolkien that is essentially: Now that [Williams?] is gone, I won't know Jack in the same way.

The quote is such a beautiful picture of friendship, marriage, and even the Trinity.

To demonstrate, let me use a different relationship: my heavenly Dad, my dad, and me. When my dad does something amazing for me, like send me a beautiful card when I'm down, leave a treat when I come home, or correct my stupid behavior, I get blown away: "That's just like God." Then I look at God because I found out something new about him, and see my dad more clearly. And by knowing them better through the other, I know me better, too.

I heard this idea in a sermon recently. It really is amazing to think about. It relates to so many relationships. I see different facets of people when I view them through another's perspective, and therefore love them greater. I'll see if I can track down the quote.

I got the quote from my pastor. He said it's from The Four Loves by Lewis.

In each of my friends there is something that only some other friend can fully bring out. By myself I am not large enough to call the whole man into activity; I want other lights than my own to show all his facets. Now that
Charles is dead, I shall never again see Ronald’s reaction to a specifically Charoline joke. Far from having more ofRonald, having him “to myself” now that Charles is away, I have less of Ronald. Hence true Friendship is the least jealous of loves. ..In this, Friendship exhibits a glorious “nearness by resemblance” to Heaven itself where the very multitude of the blessed (which no man can number) increases the [knowledge] which each has of God.
For every soul, seeing Him in her own way, doubtless communicates that unique vision to all the rest. That, says an old author, is why the Seraphim in Isaiah’s vision are crying “Holy, Holy, Holy” to one another (Isaiah VI,3) The more we thus share the Heavenly Bread between us, the more we shall all have.
